Sustainable peace for a sustainable future: 100-day countdown |
On Wednesday, 13 June 2012, the UN started the 100-day countdown to the observance of the International Day of Peace, which is marked every year on 21 September. One week from today, world leaders, together with civil society, local authorities and the private sector, will be meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to renew political commitment to long term sustainable development. It is hoped that Rio+20 will send a signal that leaders across the world are committed to building the future we all want, a future made to last-one that affords greater prosperity and equitable growth on a healthy planet for present and future generations. It is in the context of the Rio+20 Conference that the theme chosen for this year's observance of the International day of Peace is “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future”. |
