International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers - 29 May 2019

As part of the activities to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the United Nations Information Service in Geneva invites you to a ceremony which will be held on

Wednesday, 29 May 2019 at 3 p.m.

at the United Nations Memorial (Ariana Park)

Palais des Nations, Geneva

This ceremony is organized by the United Nations Information Service in Geneva, with the support of the International Association of Soldiers of Peace. The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”.  The theme was chosen to mark the 20th anniversary of the first time that the Security Council explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission to protect civilians (UNAMSIL in Sierra Leone), when it adopted Resolution 1270 on 22 October 1999.

The observance will pay tribute to the dedication, courage and high level of professionalism of all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations, as well as to honour those who have lost their lives for the cause of peace.

The programme will be held in the Ariana Park and include a wreath-laying and flag-raising ceremony. These will be followed by remarks by Mr. Clemens Adams, Director, Division of Administration, United Nations Office at Geneva (on behalf of the UNOG Director-General), Mr. Atul Khare, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Mr. Laurent Attar-Bayrou, President of the International Association of Soldiers of Peace, and H.E. Mr. Shameem Ahsan, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in Geneva. A musical performance will conclude the event.
